W.J. Usery, Jr. oral history collection [sound recording] 1987, Mar. 16 [Tape 06].

Usery compares the quality of life in the Usery household and that of other families. The post office as a centerpiece of community life is mentioned, as well as his childhood purchases, chores, etiquette, participation in plays and attendance at movies, friends, medical care and the later changing community sharing of goods. Memories of his mother's seamstress work, her hobby of "watching" people, her garden, and the impact of her discipline on Usery are noted. Mary Alice Hall's roll in the home is mentioned. Although neither parent had a particular career ambition for him, Usery describes his mother's mission for him and the importance of the dictum, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
